Author Dan Werb, PhD, unpacks his book, The Invisible Siege: the fascinating, decades-long race by scientists to understand how coronaviruses cross into humans—and how those breakthroughs paved the way for the vaccines and antivirals helping save millions of lives today. From SARS and MERS to today’s threats, this is an untold story of discovery, resilience, and what it takes to outsmart an invisible enemy.

About the speaker
Dan Werb, PhD, is an award-winning writer and epidemiologist whose work has appeared in The Globe and Mail, The New York Times, Salon, Believer Magazine, and many other outlets in Canada and the US. He is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at the University of California San Diego. His latest book is Our Wild Familiars: How Animals Are Adapting to Cities and Reshaping the Natural World. He is also the author of two previous books, City of Omens and The Invisible Siege, which won the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction. Dan Werb lives in Toronto.

Third Age Learning is a movement that encourages learning and discovery experiences for those in the 'third age'. Together, the Cambridge Third Age Learning (CTAL) group and Cambridge Public Library present monthly lectures at the Old Post Office, a part of the library’s Connections 50+ suite. CTAL sources and selects lecturers with engaging topics to inspire new thinking and engage inquisitive minds.
